WHY IS EVERYONE JUDGING THE BACK OF YOUR HEAD?

Have you ever walked around for an entire day, unaware of the broccoli stuck in your teeth?

Your co-workers let you conduct business looking like the Jolly Green Giant, and now you no longer trust them! Let this be a lesson to you, that just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it's not important.

Most people go with the "out of sight, out of mind" mentality when choosing the shape of their neck line to finish off their haircut. Let's face it, you've been telling your barber or hair stylist you want a squared or rounded neck line for YEARS, without actually knowing why. Here's what you should know when it comes to choosing the perfect neck line.

WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS?

  • SQUARED (or BLOCKED)
    • Squares off your neck line, leaving blunt edges and corners
    • PRO-TIP: stay away from this shape if you have a wider neck because it makes the back of your head (and neck) look disproprtionate
  • ROUNDED
    • Similar to a squared neck line, but the corners are rounded off
    • PRO-TIP: not recommended for someone with a slim neck, because it only accentuates neck size
  • TAPERED
    • Follows the natural growth patterns and gradually fades out the neck line to skin, leaving no distinct shape
    • This is completely customizable to your preference and hairstyle; the taper can leave some length at the back of your neck, or completely blend out to the skin

WHAT'S THE *BEST* OPTION?

  • TAPERED. The best neck line is a natural neck line.
    • Most people have some sort of cowlick, duck tail, or uneven line at the back of their neck.
    • This means tapering the neck line is the most flattering.
    • Forcing a squared or rounded shape can cause the neck line to be brought up past the natural growth (believe us... no one wants to see that grow out).
  • How long you go between haircuts can help distinguish the best option. Squared and rounded shapes will look unkempt quicker than a taper. A tapered neck line will prolong your next haircut, because it grows out smoother and keeps your hair looking nicer and longer.

  • Ultimately, the best option is your personal preference! We are always here to help guide the way to getting you to look your best.
