HOW DO I KNOW WHAT POMADE TO USE AND HOW TO USE IT?
The first pomade was released in 1925, and at the time of release, it was a styling product that was one-size-fits-all.
Over the years, we may have had some questionable fashion faux pas (R.I.P. JNCO Jeans), but we were graced with the creation of the ever-evolving pomade.
Now pomades exist for all hair styles and types, including our Floyd's 99 pomades, as well as Reuzel's amazing collection of different pomades (which is a great example of the pomade's evolution).
THE NITTY GRITTY
When it comes to pomades, less is more... but also, more is more. Always start with a small amount of pomade because once it's on, it's on. Too much pomade can leave your hair looking oily and weighed down, so it's better to layer the product in your hair until you have the desired result.
Wet or dry application? It depends on the product and desired look. If your hair is wet, it can dilute a water-soluble pomade by reducing its hold level. If it's wax-based, the product might not coat the hair.
Towel-dried hair can make applying the product easier. Dry application can work best for fine, or thinning hair. But one thing's for sure... clean hair is ideal.
To start, rub the products in your hands to emulsify (another work for making it easier to work with). Then, apply the product from your roots to your ends. Once the hair is evenly coated, use a comb, or your fingers, to set it to its desired look.
Now you have the basic tools to pick out the right pomade and know how to use it correctly! Picking the perfect pomade and mastering the styling technique can be a bit of trial-and-error, but remember, not all pomades are the same -- each one has its own benefits and purpose.
DISCLAIMER - Pomades with high shine aren't suited for men with oily, fine or thinning hair. If you have dull to dry hair, you might want to try a wax-based pomade with shine to lock in moisture. If you end up choosing a pomade that's wax- OR oil-based, you'll want to add a special clarifying shampoo to your lineup of hair products for your typical routine.
